Things to Do in Monterrey βBest Restaurants
Monterrey is the carne asada capital of Mexico, and grilled meat is a way of life here. Locals cook premium cuts over mesquite wood on massive outdoor grills. The local cabrito (roasted young goat) is a dish you will not find done this well anywhere else. Budget 150 to 350 MXN ($9 to $21) per person for a proper meal.
If you want to eat at the top spots in San Pedro Garza Garcia, you need to make reservations weeks in advance. Match days will pack every dining room in the city, so do not expect to just walk in anywhere near the stadium.
- Try the arrachera at La Nacional for $21.
- Hit Mercado Juarez for a $4.20 machacado con huevo breakfast.
- Grab cabrito at El Gran Pastor on Constitucion Ave.
- Pair your carne asada with a local craft beer from Cerveceria Primus.

El Gran Pastor
$$The most famous cabrito restaurant in Monterrey. A full plate of roasted kid goat with beans, tortillas, and salsa costs about 280 MXN ($17). They have been roasting goats in the front window since the 1960s.

La Nacional
$$Premium cuts of beef grilled over mesquite. The arrachera (skirt steak, 350 MXN / $21) is outstanding. Pair it with a local craft beer from Cerveceria Primus.

Mercado Juarez
$A traditional market with food stalls on the upper floor. Machacado con huevo (dried beef with scrambled eggs, 70 MXN / $4.20) is the local breakfast. Fresh fruit juices for 25 MXN ($1.50).
Transport Guide
Estadio BBVA is in Guadalupe, about 10km east of downtown Monterrey. The Metrorrey Metro does not reach the stadium directly, which catches a lot of fans off guard. Your best options are Didi or Uber rideshare, costing $80 to $150 MXN ($4 to $8 USD) from downtown.
Monterrey is the hottest World Cup host city, hitting 35 to 40Β°C in June. The stadium is fully open-air with no roof. Drink at least 2 litres of water before the match, bring a water bottle, and wear light clothing. This is the hottest stadium experience in the entire tournament.
- Download Didi before you arrive; it is usually 10 to 20% cheaper than Uber.
- Book your ride 60 to 90 minutes before kickoff to avoid surge pricing.
- Expect heavy traffic on the roads leading into Guadalupe.
- Do not attempt to walk long distances in the midday heat.
- Didi and Uber are both available in Monterrey. Didi is generally 10 to 20% cheaper than Uber. Download both apps before your trip. From downtown to Estadio BBVA expect to pay $80 to $150 MXN ($4 to $8 USD) on Didi. Book 60 to 90 minutes before kickoff to avoid surge pricing.
- EXTREME HEAT WARNING: Monterrey in June reaches 35 to 40C. Estadio BBVA is completely open-air with no roof and no air conditioning. Drink at least 2 litres of water before the match, bring a water bottle, wear light clothing and sunscreen. This is the hottest stadium experience in the entire tournament.
Best Neighborhoods
Barrio Antiguo is the most atmospheric place to stay, packed with colonial architecture and nightlife. This is where Monterrey comes alive at night, right next to the Macroplaza. Expect to pay $50 to $100 per night here.
If you prefer modern amenities, San Pedro Garza Garcia is the wealthiest municipality in Mexico and feels more like a US suburb. Valle Oriente has newer business hotels at good prices and is closer to the stadium.
- Stay in Barrio Antiguo for walkable mezcalerias and live music.
- Choose San Pedro Garza Garcia for upscale malls and fine dining.
- Book Valle Oriente if you want a shorter 15-minute drive to Estadio BBVA.
- Lock in your hotel months in advance, as rooms under $100 will vanish quickly.

Things to Do
Parque Fundidora
A 142-acre urban park built on the site of a former steel foundry. The old blast furnaces are preserved as industrial monuments. Walking trails, a lake, an ice rink, and the Horno3 museum (50 MXN / $3) inside a converted blast furnace.
Tip: Rent a pedal boat on the lake (60 MXN / $3.60 for 30 minutes). The park is well maintained and safe. Come in the evening when locals gather for exercise and socialising.
MARCO (Museum of Contemporary Art)
One of the most important contemporary art museums in Latin America. The building by Ricardo Legorreta features a large bronze dove sculpture in the courtyard. Entry is 120 MXN ($7.20). Free on Wednesdays.
Tip: Go on a Wednesday for free entry. The rotating exhibitions change every 3 months. The building architecture alone is worth the visit.
Cerro de la Silla Hike
The saddle-shaped mountain (1,820 metres) that defines the Monterrey skyline. The main trail from Parque Ecologico Chipinque (60 MXN / $3.60 entry) takes 3 to 4 hours round trip. Views of the entire city from the top.
Tip: Start before 7 AM to avoid the heat. Bring at least 2 litres of water per person. The trail is well marked but strenuous. Not recommended in summer without serious heat preparation.
