World Cup 2026 Monterrey: Public Transport Guide
Airport transfers, metro, bus, taxi, and cycling info for Monterrey
Match-Day Transport
If you're heading down for the tournament, you need a solid World Cup 2026 Monterrey: public transport guide. I learned the hard way back in 2014 that winging it on match day is a recipe for disaster, especially in extreme heat. Monterrey in June is no joke, temperatures regularly hit 40C (104F), and Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe is completely open-air. You don't want to be caught walking long distances in the midday sun, and you definitely need to know the match day hours before you leave your hotel.
While the Metrorrey is great for getting around downtown and Barrio Antiguo, it won't take you all the way to the stadium. The closest stop is Exposicion on Line 1, which still leaves you with a 4km gap. Traditional tailgating isn't huge here, but the pre-game atmosphere around the stadium is incredible if you arrive early. Here is what you actually need to know to get to the match without melting:
- Download Didi before you land. It's usually 10 to 20% cheaper than Uber and widely used by locals.
- Expect to pay $80 to $150 MXN ($4 to $8 USD) for a rideshare from downtown to Estadio BBVA.
- Book your ride 90 minutes before kickoff. Surge pricing hits hard as the stadium fills up.
- Skip the street taxis. Stick to official sitios or apps for safety and fair pricing.
Plan your route early, hydrate constantly, and lock in your rideshare before the final whistle blows. The post-match surge is brutal, so grab your Didi while you're walking out of the gates. Book your transit passes early and stay cool.

Metro and Subway
Monterrey Metro (Metrorrey)
Monterrey's Metro (Metrorrey) has 3 lines covering downtown, Macroplaza, Barrio Antiguo, and Parque Fundidora. Line 1 runs east-west through downtown, Line 2 runs north-south, and Line 3 connects to industrial areas. The system carries over 150,000 riders daily. A single ride costs $5.50 MXN ($0.28 USD). Buy a rechargeable card at any station kiosk. The Metro is excellent for exploring the city, but it does NOT reach Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe. The closest station is Exposicion on Line 1, approximately 4km from the stadium. You need Didi, Uber, or taxi for the final leg to the match.
Getting to Estadio BBVA
The Monterrey Metro does NOT have a station at or near Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe. The closest station is Exposicion on Line 1, approximately 4km from the stadium. You need Didi, Uber, or taxi for the final leg. A budget-friendly hybrid option is to take Metro Line 1 to Exposicion station and then book a Didi for the last 4km, costing about $65 to $105 MXN ($3 to $5 USD) total. EXTREME HEAT WARNING: Monterrey in June reaches 35 to 40C. Estadio BBVA is fully open-air with no roof and no air conditioning. This is the hottest stadium in the tournament. Hydrate heavily and arrive early to avoid standing in the sun.

The Hottest Stadium in the Tournament
Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe has no roof and no air conditioning. Monterrey in June regularly exceeds 35C and can reach 40C. This is not a mild inconvenience, it is genuinely extreme heat. Drink at least 2 litres of water before the match, bring a full water bottle inside, wear a hat and sunscreen, and avoid alcohol before and during the match. If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or unwell find shade and water immediately and alert stadium staff.
Bus and Tram

Transmetro BRT and City Buses
Transmetro is Monterrey's bus rapid transit system running on dedicated lanes along major corridors. The Lincoln corridor is the most useful for fans. Fare is $12 MXN ($0.60 USD) per ride. Regular city buses also cover neighbourhoods not on the Metro, costing $12 MXN. For World Cup fans, Transmetro is useful for getting around the city, but does not run directly to Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe. Use Didi or Uber for stadium trips.
Bus fare is $12 MXN ($0.60 USD) per ride, same as the rail system. Your Feria card works on both bus and rail.

Metrorrey (Metro Light Rail)
Metrorrey has 3 lines covering downtown Monterrey, Macroplaza, Barrio Antiguo, and Parque Fundidora. Line 1 runs east-west and is the most useful for fans. Line 2 runs north-south through the city centre. A single ride costs $5.50 MXN ($0.28 USD). Buy a rechargeable Feria card at any station kiosk. The Metro runs from 5 AM to midnight daily. For the Metro + Didi hybrid route to Estadio BBVA: take Line 1 eastbound to Exposicion station, then book Didi for the final 4km to the stadium. Total cost about $65 to $105 MXN ($3 to $5 USD). The Metro is excellent for exploring Monterrey but cannot get you to the match on its own.
Cycling and Walking
Bike Share
Monterrey has limited cycling infrastructure compared to other Mexican host cities. Paseo Santa Lucia riverwalk between Macroplaza and Parque Fundidora is a pleasant 2.5km walking and cycling path with shade along the canal. Not practical for cycling to Estadio BBVA in extreme heat (10 to 12km from downtown with no dedicated cycling route). Walking is limited to early morning or evening due to temperatures of 35 to 40C. Always carry water. Estadio BBVA is too far from downtown to walk.
Walking
Downtown Monterrey is walkable, and Estadio BBVA is accessible from the city centre. Stay hydrated in the summer heat and wear comfortable shoes.

Travel like a local
Most fans find Didi or Uber from downtown or the Metro hybrid route the easiest way to get around Monterrey on match days
