World Cup 2026 Houston Travel Guide
NRG Stadium is the only World Cup venue with a fully retractable roof, so Houston's summer heat is no match for climate-controlled football
Your World Cup City Guide
I've taken the METRORail Red Line down to NRG Stadium more times than I can count, and it beats sitting in Houston traffic every single time. When you use this World Cup 2026 Houston travel guide to plan your trip, the first thing you need to know is that the summer heat here is intense. Thankfully, NRG Stadium has a retractable roof, so you will watch the matches in absolute air-conditioned comfort. But your experience starts long before kickoff, usually with some serious tailgating in the massive parking lots surrounding the venue.
If you want the best pre-game atmosphere outside the stadium lots, head over to EaDo (East Downtown). It is packed with soccer bars and breweries where fans gather before jumping on the rail. You will want to make reservations for dinner well in advance, especially if you plan to hit up spots like Truth BBQ or The Original Ninfa's on Navigation. The crowds will be massive, and walk-ins simply will not cut it during the tournament.
Here are a few essential tips for your stay:
- Book a hotel in the Medical Center area for a quick 10-minute walk to the stadium gates.
- Buy a $3 METRO Day Pass to ride the rail all day without fumbling for tickets.
- Check the official match day hours so you know exactly when the stadium gates open.
- Grab a banh mi in Bellaire for a cheap, heavy-hitting lunch between games.
Houston is a massive, sprawling city, but if you stick to the rail line and plan your meals, you will have an unforgettable tournament. Start booking your hotels now before the prices double.

Houston is the most diverse food city in America, and you will eat better here than in almost any other host city. The Bellaire Chinatown strip has the best Vietnamese food outside Vietnam. Tex-Mex joints serve green sauce you will dream about for weeks. And the Nigerian community along Bissonnet Road has created a West African food corridor unlike anything else in the USA.
Because 50,000 fans will flood the city for every match, you absolutely must make reservations for dinner well in advance. Walk-ins at the top spots simply will not cut it during the tournament. If you plan to hit up Truth BBQ in the Heights, get there before noon because they sell out of brisket by 2 PM.
My top food recommendations:
- Pho Binh in Midtown for a $12 bowl of rare beef pho.
- The Original Ninfa's on Navigation for the beef fajitas that started it all.
- Truth BBQ for James Beard-level brisket and pork ribs.

Pho Binh
$A legendary Houston pho spot. The large pho tai ($12) is loaded with rare beef and comes with a mountain of fresh herbs. Grab a banh mi ($6) for the match.

The Original Ninfa's on Navigation
$$The restaurant that invented the fajita in 1973. The beef fajitas ($22) are still the best in Houston. Order the green sauce on everything.

Truth BBQ
$$James Beard Award semifinalist. Brisket ($26 per pound) and pork ribs ($22 per pound) sell out by 2 PM. Go before noon for the full menu.
Transport Guide
NRG Stadium is directly served by the METRORail Red Line, making it one of the easiest World Cup stadiums to reach by public transit. The NRG Park station sits just a 2-minute walk from the stadium gates. A single ride costs $1.25, and the journey from downtown Houston takes exactly 20 to 25 minutes.
On match days, trains run every 6 minutes with extended service until midnight. If you fly into George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), a rideshare to your downtown hotel costs $40 to $65 and takes about 45 minutes. From Hobby Airport, a rideshare runs $20 to $35 and takes just 20 minutes. There is no direct rail from either airport to the stadium.
Transit tips to save you time:
- Buy a $3 METRO Day Pass on your phone to avoid the ticket machines.
- Board the Red Line at Main Street Square to guarantee a spot before it gets crowded.
- Use rideshare apps from the airports, as the bus transfers take too long.

Best Neighborhoods
The Medical Center and NRG area sit closest to the stadium and offer highly functional, affordable hotels. If you stay there, you can literally walk to the gates in 10 minutes. Downtown Houston serves as the best overall base because it puts you right on the METRORail line with easy access to restaurants and the Discovery Green park.
If you want a bit more nightlife, Midtown and Montrose offer the best independent restaurants, craft cocktail bars, and vintage shops along Westheimer Road. And do not forget about EaDo (East Downtown), it is the undisputed hub for soccer fans in Houston, packed with breweries and sports bars where the pre-game energy is incredible.
Where to book your stay:

Things to Do
You will have plenty of downtime between matches, and Houston delivers on massive attractions. The Museum District packs 19 different museums into a 1.5-mile radius, all easily accessible by the METRORail. The Menil Collection is always free and houses 17,000 works, while the Museum of Fine Arts is one of the largest in the country and offers free entry on Thursdays.
If you have a rental car, Space Center Houston is an absolute must. It sits about a 30-minute drive south of the city. For $30, you can see the actual Apollo 17 capsule, touch a real moon rock, and take a tram tour through the NASA training facilities.
Top things to do off the pitch:
- Walk the 3-mile hike-and-bike trail at Buffalo Bayou Park.
- Watch hundreds of thousands of bats emerge at dusk under the Waugh Drive Bridge.
- Book the Level 9 Tour at Space Center Houston for behind-the-scenes access.
Space Center Houston
The official visitor center of NASA's Johnson Space Center. See the actual Apollo 17 capsule, touch a real moon rock, and take a tram tour to see Mission Control and astronaut training facilities. Entry is $30 for adults.
Tip: Book the Level 9 Tour ($30 extra) for behind-the-scenes access to areas the public tram does not visit. Allow 4 to 5 hours.
Museum District
19 museums within a 1.5-mile radius, all accessible by METRORail. The Menil Collection (free) houses 17,000 works. The Museum of Fine Arts ($25, free Thursdays) is one of the largest in the USA.
Tip: Start at the Menil Collection (free, always) then walk to the Rothko Chapel (free) next door. Both are unlike anything else in Houston.
Buffalo Bayou Park
A 160-acre park along the bayou connecting downtown to the west side. Rent a kayak ($25 per hour), walk the 3-mile hike-and-bike trail, or visit the Cistern ($5), a vast underground drinking water reservoir turned art installation.
Tip: The sunset bat colony under the Waugh Drive Bridge is free to watch. Several hundred thousand Mexican free-tailed bats emerge at dusk from March through November.
