World Cup 2026 Houston: Public Transport Guide
Airport transfers, metro, bus, taxi, and cycling info for Houston
Match-Day Transport
Getting around Houston in the summer heat is no joke, but the transit setup for match days is actually solid. I stood outside NRG Stadium back in 2023, and the humidity hits you like a wall. You do not want to be walking miles in July. That is why the METRORail Red Line is the star of this World Cup 2026 Houston: public transport guide. It drops you right at the NRG Park station, literally a two-minute walk from the stadium gates.
If you fly into George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), skip the rental car. The traffic on I-45 will just stress you out before the game even starts. Grab a rideshare or hop on the METRO Bus 102 if you want to save cash. Once you hit downtown, the rail system connects you to the best spots. You can easily reach the food stalls at Post Houston or the bars along Washington Avenue without driving.
Here is how to handle your match day transit like a local:
- Buy a $3.00 METRO Day Pass so you can ride the Red, Green, and Purple lines all day.
- Check the clear bag policy before you board the train; NRG Stadium enforces it strictly.
- Make dinner reservations early if you plan to eat downtown before the match.
- Skip the traditional tailgating in the stadium lots; the asphalt gets dangerously hot in the afternoon.
Houston is massive, but you can travel the core easily if you stick to the rails. Grab your transit card, pack plenty of water, and get ready for a loud Texas atmosphere. Book your hotel near a Red Line station today.

Bus and Tram

METRO Bus Network
METRO operates 80+ bus routes across the Houston metro area. Park and Ride express services run from suburbs to downtown. Bus 102 is the key airport route, running from IAH Terminal C to downtown for $1.25 (50 to 70 minutes). Your METRO Q Card works on all buses and METRORail trains.
Bus fare is $1.25 per ride, same as the rail system. Your METRO Q Card works on both bus and rail.

METRORail Green and Purple Lines
Houston does not have a traditional tram or streetcar system. The METRORail Green Line serves the East End (including EaDo and the Second Ward), and the Purple Line runs southeast through the Third Ward and the University of Houston campus. Both connect to the Red Line downtown. Same $1.25 fare and 3-hour transfer window with your METRO Q Card. These lines are useful for reaching restaurants and nightlife outside the Red Line corridor.
Cycling and Walking
Bike Share
Houston BCycle has 100+ stations across downtown, Midtown, the Museum District, and the Heights. A single ride costs $3.00 for 30 minutes. The Buffalo Bayou Park trail is a scenic 3-mile route along the bayou. However, cycling is NOT recommended during Houston summer days due to extreme heat and humidity. Only practical early morning before 9 AM or evening after 7 PM.
Walking
Downtown Houston is walkable for short distances between Main Street restaurants, Discovery Green park, and the Theater District. The Buffalo Bayou Park trail is scenic and connects downtown to the west side. Montrose and Midtown are also walkable neighborhoods with restaurants and nightlife. WARNING: Houston summer temperatures reach 35 to 38C with humidity making it feel like 40 to 45C. Carry water at all times and seek air-conditioned spaces frequently. NRG Stadium is NOT walkable from downtown.
