World Cup 2026 Guadalajara Travel Guide
Estadio Akron sits inside a forest of volcanic rock, and the birthplace of mariachi and tequila adds culture to every matchday
Your World Cup City Guide
If you are heading to Mexico for the tournament, this World Cup 2026 Guadalajara travel guide is your playbook for exploring the city. Guadalajara brings a completely different energy than Mexico City or Monterrey. You will feel it the second you step off the plane at Miguel Hidalgo International. The city is the undisputed birthplace of mariachi and tequila, meaning the pre-game atmosphere here is going to be loud, proud, and heavily poured.
Estadio Akron sits out in the Zapopan suburb, about 12 kilometers northwest of downtown. It is a stunning venue built into a hill that looks like a volcano, holding just under 50,000 fans. Because the main Metro lines do not run directly to the stadium gates, you need a solid transit plan for match day. Traditional tailgating isn't a massive local tradition, so hit the downtown fan zone or local bars before you travel to Zapopan.
Here is how to make your trip work:
- Grab a Mi Movilidad card for $10 MXN to use the Mi Macro BRT system.
- Stay in Chapultepec or Americana if you want walkable nightlife and cocktail bars.
- Book your rideshare early on game day, as match day hours mean heavy traffic starting two hours before kickoff.
- Make dining reservations at places like Anita Li well in advance.
- Eat at Birrieria las 9 Esquinas in the Centro Historico before heading to the stadium.
- Have your digital tickets downloaded to your phone before you leave your hotel.
With afternoon rain showers common in June and July, pack a light jacket. Plan your itinerary early, secure your hotel in Centro Historico, and get ready for an unforgettable match day.

Guadalajara is the birthplace of some of Mexico's most iconic dishes. Birria (slow-cooked goat or beef stew) and tortas ahogadas (pork sandwiches drowned in spicy tomato sauce) are the two must-tries. Street food is everywhere and costs 20 to 50 MXN ($1.20 to $3) per item.
Because traditional tailgating isn't a big thing at Estadio Akron, you will want to eat in the city before heading to Zapopan. Make reservations early if you plan to eat at popular sit-down spots.
- Try the birria de chivo at Birrieria las 9 Esquinas in Centro Historico.
- Grab a torta ahogada at La Chata, open since 1942.
- For a modern twist, order the Korean-style birria tacos at Anita Li.
- Carry cash for street food and small market stalls.

Birrieria las 9 Esquinas
$The most famous birria spot in the birthplace of birria. This no-frills corner joint has served slow-cooked goat stew since the 1950s. Locals line up before 9 AM on weekends.

Birrieria El Chololo
$Family-run birrieria closer to the stadium in Zapopan. The birria tacos dorados here are perfectly crispy, dunked in rich consomme.

Birrieria Apatzingan
$Beloved neighborhood birrieria on Chapultepec with a loyal morning crowd. Their birria de res uses a blend of dried chiles that gives it a deep smoky flavor.
Guadalajara Transport Guide
Estadio Akron is in Zapopan, 12km northwest of downtown Guadalajara. The Metro does not reach the stadium directly. Your best options are Didi or Uber rideshare, costing $80 to $150 MXN ($4 to $8 USD) from downtown.
The Metro is excellent for exploring the city at just $10 MXN ($0.50 USD) per ride. Buy a Mi Movilidad card at any Metro station and use it on all trains and buses. Keep in mind that match day hours mean extra buses run on the Mi Macro BRT system starting two hours before kickoff.
- Didi is generally 10 to 20% cheaper than Uber and very popular with locals.
- The walk from the closest BRT station to the stadium takes about 15 minutes.
- Always use official taxi sitios or app-based rideshares for safety.
- Download both Uber and Didi before you arrive to compare prices.
- Didi and Uber are both available in Guadalajara. Didi is generally 10 to 20% cheaper than Uber for the same journey and is very popular with locals. Download both apps before your trip. From downtown to Estadio Akron expect to pay $80 to $150 MXN ($4 to $8 USD) on Didi.
- The Guadalajara Metro (Tren Ligero) has 3 lines covering the city centre for just $10 MXN ($0.50 USD) per ride. However the Metro does NOT have a station at Estadio Akron. Use the Metro for city exploration and Didi or Uber for the match. Always use official taxi sitios or app-based rideshare for safety.
Best Neighborhoods
Central Guadalajara (near the cathedral and Hospicio Cabanas) is the best base for sightseeing and transit access. Chapultepec/Americana is the trendy restaurant district. Zapopan is closer to the stadium but has less atmosphere.
Choosing the right neighborhood makes a huge difference for your match day experience. You want to balance proximity to the fan zone with easy access to transit heading toward the stadium. If you want an upscale, quieter stay, look into the Providencia neighborhood.
- Centro Historico offers rooms for $40 to $80 per night and is packed with history.
- Chapultepec is the city's trendiest area, with hotels from $60 to $120 per night.
- Tlaquepaque provides a quieter, traditional village feel just 20 minutes away by car.
- Book early, as rooms in Providencia and Chapultepec will sell out fast.
