Guadalajara: Public Transport Guide World Cup 2026
Airport transfers, metro, bus, taxi, and cycling info for Guadalajara
Match-Day Transport
If you are heading to Mexico for the tournament, you need this World Cup 2026 Guadalajara: public transport guide. I have traveled to match days in a dozen host cities, and Guadalajara requires a specific game plan. The city's Tren Ligero is fantastic for exploring the historic centre, but here is the catch: it does not reach Estadio Akron. The stadium sits out in Zapopan, about 12km northwest of downtown, meaning you will need to rely on rideshares or a hybrid transit approach.
When I was last in Jalisco, I learned quickly that Didi is the local app of choice. It usually runs 10 to 20 percent cheaper than Uber. On match day, surge pricing hits hard, so you want to plan your route before the crowds swell and review the stadium bag policy before you leave your hotel room.
Here is your match day transit playbook:
- Buy a Mi Movilidad card at the airport for $10 MXN per metro ride.
- Take Line 1 to Periferico Norte station to get closer to the stadium.
- Book a Didi from the station for the final 5km (around $80 MXN).
- Pack a $40 MXN rain poncho from a local market, as June brings heavy afternoon thunderstorms and Estadio Akron has no roof.
- Walk 15 minutes away from the stadium gates after the final whistle before calling your ride back to downtown.
- Check accessible transit routes ahead of time if you or your group have mobility needs.
Do not let the transit gap stress you out. Grab your transit card, download Didi, and get ready for an unbelievable atmosphere.

Metro and Subway
Guadalajara Metro (Tren Ligero)
Guadalajara's Metro (Tren Ligero) has 3 lines covering the historic centre, Tlaquepaque, and Zapopan centro. Line 1 runs north-south through downtown and is the most useful for fans. The system carries over 230,000 riders daily. A single ride costs just 10 MXN ($0.50 USD). Buy a rechargeable card at any station kiosk. The Metro is excellent for exploring the city, but it does NOT have a station at Estadio Akron. The closest stations (Periferico Norte, Federalismo) are 4 to 5km from the stadium. Use Didi, Uber, or official taxi for the final leg to the match.
Getting to Estadio Akron
The Guadalajara Metro does NOT have a station at or near Estadio Akron in Zapopan. The closest Metro stations (Periferico Norte, Federalismo) are 4 to 5km from the stadium. You need Didi, Uber, or taxi for the final leg. The Metro is excellent for exploring the city but cannot get you to the match on its own. A budget-friendly hybrid option is to take the Metro to Periferico Norte station and then book a Didi for the last 4 to 5km, costing about $70 to $90 MXN ($4 to $5 USD) total.

Rainy Season at an Open-Air Stadium
June and July are Guadalajara's rainy season. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are common and can be intense but usually pass within 30 to 60 minutes. Estadio Akron has no roof. If rain falls during the match, fans in exposed seating will get wet. Bring a compact rain poncho (available at markets for $30 to $50 MXN). The match will not be cancelled for rain. Mexican fans embrace it and the atmosphere stays electric.
Bus and Tram

Mi Macro BRT and City Buses
Mi Macro BRT is Guadalajara's bus rapid transit system running on dedicated lanes through the city. It is faster than regular buses during peak hours. The city also has a network of regular buses covering neighbourhoods not on the Metro. Both cost 10 MXN ($0.50 USD) per ride. For World Cup fans, Mi Macro is useful for getting around the city, but does not run directly to Estadio Akron.
Bus fare is 10 MXN ($0.50 USD) per ride, same as the rail system. Your Mi Movilidad card works on both bus and rail.

Tren Ligero (Metro Light Rail)
For fans using the Metro + rideshare hybrid route: take Line 1 northbound to Periferico Norte station, the closest Metro stop to Estadio Akron (4 to 5km away). From the station exit, open Didi and book a ride for the final stretch to the stadium. Total cost about $70 to $90 MXN ($4 to $5 USD). The Metro runs from 5 AM to 11 PM daily and your Mi Movilidad card works on all lines and Mi Macro BRT buses. For sightseeing, Line 2 is useful for reaching Tlaquepaque artisan district from the historic centre.
Cycling and Walking
Bike Share
MiBici bike share has 300+ stations across Guadalajara and Zapopan. A single 30-minute ride costs 15 MXN ($0.80 USD) and an annual membership is just 475 MXN ($25 USD). The system is great for exploring the historic centre, Chapultepec, and Tlaquepaque. Dedicated bike lanes run along several major avenues. Not practical for Estadio Akron (12km from downtown with no dedicated cycling route). Best used for city exploration between matches.
Walking
Guadalajara's historic centre is very walkable. Plaza Tapatia, the Cathedral, Hospicio Cabanas (UNESCO), and Mercado San Juan de Dios are all within a 15-minute walk of each other. Tlaquepaque artisan district is compact and walkable once you arrive (take Metro or Didi to get there). Chapultepec and Americana neighbourhoods are also pleasant for walking with restaurants and bars on every block. Estadio Akron in Zapopan is NOT walkable from downtown (12km). Be aware of afternoon heat (25 to 32C in June) and sudden rainy season storms that usually pass within 30 to 60 minutes.
