Every host city of the 2026 World Cup operates at least one official fan zone, a free-entry public viewing area with a large screen, food and drink vendors, and atmospheric programming around match times. FIFA, the international governing body for football, requires each host city to operate one fan zone with a minimum capacity of 20,000 standing spectators for the duration of the tournament. Many cities are operating two or more, supplemented by smaller commercial fan zones in entertainment districts.

The atmosphere at a fan zone varies from spectacular (Mexico City's Zocalo, where 100,000 people watch every Mexico match together) to indifferent (one of the suburban US fan zones, where a corporate sponsor screen sits in a half-empty parking lot). This guide ranks the 16 city-organised fan zones by atmosphere and gives you the practical detail you need: capacity, opening hours, entry rules, food and drink pricing, and whether it is worth planning a day around.

Tier 1, the spectacular fan zones

Mexico City: Zocalo

The Zocalo is the central plaza of Mexico City, the largest public square in the Americas, and one of the most historic urban spaces in the western hemisphere. For Mexico matches at Estadio Azteca, the Zocalo fills with 80,000 to 120,000 fans. The screen is mounted on the facade of the National Palace. The atmosphere when Mexico scores is generally described as the loudest collective sound in any North American city. Entry is free, no reservation required, no security gate. Food and drink vendors line the surrounding streets. The Zocalo is connected to the Mexico City Metro at four stations. Plan to arrive 90 minutes before kickoff for a position with a clear view. After a Mexico win, the celebration moves to the Angel of Independence monument on Reforma, 25 minutes' walk away. This is the headline fan zone of the entire tournament.

Toronto: Nathan Phillips Square

Nathan Phillips Square in front of Toronto City Hall is the city's main fan zone. Capacity is 25,000. The space includes a large screen, food vendors and a beer garden run by the city. For Canada matches at BMO Field, the square fills to capacity by 60 minutes before kickoff. For matches not involving Canada, the space is around 60 percent full. Entry is free, no reservation required, but bag checks are in place at all four entry points. Subway access is direct via Queen Station.

Atlanta: Centennial Olympic Park

Centennial Olympic Park is the central park of downtown Atlanta, built for the 1996 Olympic Games. Capacity is 30,000. The screen is mounted on the south side of the park, with the Atlanta city skyline as the backdrop. The fan zone is operated by the City of Atlanta and includes food trucks (mostly Atlanta-based vendors) and a craft beer garden. Entry is free, bag checks at four gates.

Tier 2, the high-quality fan zones

Vancouver: Jack Poole Plaza

Jack Poole Plaza on the Vancouver waterfront is the city's primary fan zone. Capacity is 15,000. The space includes the Olympic Cauldron from the 2010 Winter Games as a backdrop and views of Stanley Park and the North Shore mountains. For Canada matches, the plaza fills to capacity. Entry is free.

Los Angeles: Grand Park

Grand Park is a 12-acre park in downtown Los Angeles, between City Hall and the Music Centre. Capacity is 35,000. The fan zone includes a large screen, food trucks (mostly LA-based vendors) and a craft beer garden. Entry is free.

Houston: Discovery Green

Discovery Green is a 12-acre park in downtown Houston, opposite the George R. Brown Convention Centre. Capacity is 18,000. The fan zone includes a screen, food trucks and a beer garden. The Texas summer heat is the constraint: the early-afternoon matches are uncomfortable in direct sun.

Boston: City Hall Plaza

City Hall Plaza in central Boston is the city's main fan zone. Capacity is 20,000. The plaza was renovated in 2022 and now includes shade structures and food vendors. The screen is mounted on the south side. Entry is free, bag checks at all entry points.

Guadalajara: Plaza de Armas

Plaza de Armas, the central plaza of Guadalajara, is the city's main fan zone. Capacity is 15,000. The space includes the Guadalajara Cathedral as the backdrop. For Mexico matches at Estadio Akron, the plaza fills to capacity 60 minutes before kickoff. Entry is free.

Tier 3, the standard fan zones

Dallas: Klyde Warren Park

Klyde Warren Park is a 5.2-acre deck park built over Woodall Rodgers Freeway in central Dallas. Capacity is 12,000. The fan zone includes a screen, food trucks and a beer garden. The Texas summer heat is the same constraint as Houston.

Miami: Bayfront Park

Bayfront Park in downtown Miami is the city's main fan zone. Capacity is 25,000. The space includes views of Biscayne Bay. The Miami summer heat and humidity are the constraint: matches in direct afternoon sun are uncomfortable.

Seattle: Seattle Center

Seattle Center, the 74-acre civic complex around the Space Needle, hosts the city's fan zone on Fisher Pavilion lawn. Capacity is 18,000. The space includes views of the Space Needle and Mount Rainier on clear days.

Monterrey: Macroplaza

Macroplaza, the 40-acre plaza in central Monterrey, is the city's fan zone. Capacity is 30,000. The space is one of the largest urban plazas in Latin America. For Mexico matches at Estadio BBVA, the plaza fills.

Philadelphia: Independence Mall

Independence Mall, the National Park Service site that includes Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, hosts the Philadelphia fan zone. Capacity is 15,000. The historic backdrop is the appeal.

Tier 4, the corporate fan zones

Kansas City: Power and Light District

The Power and Light District operates the Kansas City fan zone in its central plaza. Capacity is 8,000. The space is privately operated, with food and drink at standard bar prices.

San Francisco Bay Area: Mission Square (San Jose)

The fan zone is in San Jose rather than central San Francisco, located at Mission Square in front of San Jose City Hall. Capacity is 12,000. The location is convenient to Levi's Stadium but inconvenient to most San Francisco hotels.

New York and New Jersey: Liberty State Park (Jersey City)

The Liberty State Park fan zone has a Statue of Liberty backdrop and a 30,000 capacity. The challenge is access: Liberty State Park is on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River and is accessible by Hudson-Bergen Light Rail or PATH train (one transfer).

Practical notes for fan zone planning

Entry to every official fan zone is free, but bag checks are in place at every host city. Bags larger than a standard backpack are not permitted. Outside food and drink are permitted in some fan zones (most Mexican zones, Toronto, Vancouver) and prohibited in others (most US zones with food vendors inside). Check the host city's fan zone page before you arrive.

The screen quality at every official fan zone is high (10,000-lumen LED panels, 20 by 12 metres minimum). Audio quality varies. The atmosphere depends entirely on the crowd density and the result. Plan to arrive 60 to 90 minutes before kickoff for any Tier 1 or Tier 2 fan zone, and 30 minutes for Tier 3 or Tier 4.

For a fan without a stadium ticket, the best fan zone in each host city is a better experience than watching at a hotel bar. The communal viewing, the size of the screen, and the size of the celebration on a goal are all higher-energy than any indoor venue. The official fan zones also have FIFA-licensed merchandise stalls and meet-and-greet appearances by retired players (programming announced city-by-city closer to the tournament).
