World Cup 2026 Atlanta: Your Complete Matchday Guide
Mercedes-Benz Stadium's retractable pinwheel roof opens to the Georgia sky, and MARTA rail puts you downtown in 20 minutes
Your World Cup 2026 Atlanta Guide
I stood outside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2018, and the first thing that hit me was the sheer scale of the place. For World Cup 2026 Atlanta, you will want to base yourself downtown or in Midtown. The city gets hot in June, so you will not want to walk miles in the midday sun. Luckily, the MARTA rail system is your best friend here. You can fly into Hartsfield-Jackson, grab your bags, and take the Gold Line straight to your hotel in 20 minutes. No rental car needed.
When matchday rolls around, take the train to Vine City station. It drops you a 10-minute walk from the stadium gates. The retractable roof might be closed to keep the 71,000 fans cool, but the atmosphere inside will be deafening. Before you head to the match, you need to eat. Skip the generic sports bars and head to Fox Bros Bar-B-Q on DeKalb Avenue. Order the smoked wings and a pound of brisket. If you want true Southern soul food, Busy Bee Cafe on MLK Jr Drive has served the best fried chicken in the city since 1947.
Hotels downtown average around $150 a night right now, but those prices will spike as the tournament gets closer. Book your room early. If you have a free afternoon, walk the Atlanta BeltLine or check out the massive whale sharks at the Georgia Aquarium. Atlanta knows how to host massive sporting events, and this tournament will take over the entire city. Grab your tickets, load up your Breeze Card, and get ready for the trip of a lifetime.

Transport Guide
Getting around Atlanta on matchday is surprisingly easy if you use the trains. Mercedes-Benz Stadium sits right in the middle of downtown. You should absolutely avoid driving or taking a rideshare near the stadium before kickoff. The traffic gets completely gridlocked. Instead, buy a Breeze Card at any MARTA station and load it up. The Vine City station drops you just a 10-minute walk from the stadium gates. Trains run every 10 to 15 minutes. After the final whistle, the stations get packed. I usually grab a drink at a nearby bar and wait an hour for the crowds to thin out. If you fly into Hartsfield-Jackson, the train station is right inside the domestic terminal. It takes 20 minutes to reach downtown.
- Buy a Breeze Card at any MARTA station ($1 for the card, then load fares). Single rides cost $2.50, day passes cost $9.
- Hartsfield-Jackson Airport (ATL) to downtown takes 20 minutes on MARTA Gold Line. The airport station is inside the terminal.
- The free Atlanta Streetcar loops through downtown and connects to Centennial Olympic Park, the World of Coca-Cola, and the Georgia Aquarium.
- MARTA runs every 10 to 15 minutes on match days. Trains can be packed post-match. Wait one train and the next one will be less crowded.
Best Neighborhoods
Picking the right neighborhood changes your entire trip. Downtown Atlanta is the most convenient spot. You can walk to the stadium, the CNN Center, and the Georgia Aquarium in under 15 minutes. The hotels here run between $120 and $200 a night, but they book up fast. If you want a bit more local flavor, look at Midtown. It takes just 10 minutes on the MARTA train to reach downtown, and you get much better restaurants and bars. The streets are lined with trees, and you have easy access to Piedmont Park. For the coolest vibe, check out the Old Fourth Ward. It sits right on the BeltLine. You will need to take a 15-minute rideshare to the stadium, but the local food scene makes it entirely worth the short commute.
Downtown (Centennial Park area) β Walking distance (5 to 10 min)
Everything is here: the stadium, Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca-Cola, CNN Center, and Centennial Olympic Park. Functional but not Atlanta's most charming area. Convenience is the main draw.
Price: $120 to $200 per night
Midtown β 10 min by MARTA
Atlanta's arts and culture hub. The High Museum of Art, Piedmont Park, and the Fox Theatre are all here. Better restaurants and nightlife than downtown, and still very convenient.
Price: $140 to $230 per night
Old Fourth Ward / Inman Park β 15 min by MARTA or rideshare
Atlanta's coolest neighbourhoods. The BeltLine trail, Ponce City Market, and Krog Street Market are here. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birth home is in the Old Fourth Ward.
Price: $130 to $200 per night
Things to Do
You will have plenty of downtime between matches, and Atlanta has a lot to offer. The Georgia Aquarium is an absolute must-see. It sits right downtown, just a short walk from the stadium. Tickets cost about $42, and you can easily spend three hours looking at the whale sharks. When you want some fresh air, head to the Atlanta BeltLine. This paved trail circles the city and connects some of the best neighborhoods. You can rent a scooter or just walk. Stop at the breweries along the path for a cold drink. You should also visit the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park. It is completely free to enter and offers a powerful look at the civil rights movement.
Georgia Aquarium
The largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere, with 10 million gallons of water and 100,000+ animals. Whale sharks, beluga whales, and manta rays. Entry is $42 for adults. Right next to the stadium.
Tip: Buy tickets online to skip the line. Go after 3 PM for smaller crowds. The 4D theatre show ($8 extra) is great for kids.
Atlanta BeltLine
A 22-mile network of trails, parks, and art installations built on abandoned railroad corridors circling the city. The Eastside Trail (2.25 miles from Piedmont Park to Inman Park) is the most popular and scenic stretch.
Tip: Rent a scooter or bike from any BeltLine trailhead. The Eastside Trail passes Ponce City Market and Krog Street Market, both good for food and drink stops.
Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park
Free entry to the birth home of Dr. King (501 Auburn Avenue), Ebenezer Baptist Church where he preached, and the King Center with his tomb. The visitor center has exhibits on the civil rights movement.
Tip: Register for the birth home tour online. Tours are free but limited to 15 people per session. Arrive early to secure a spot.
